“PDRN is not filler. I use it when the goal is to improve the quality and behavior of the skin—not to make the face larger.” — Dr. Anna Avaliani |
What PDRN Actually Is
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a collection of purified DNA fragments commonly derived from salmonid sources. Related polynucleotide products are used in regenerative aesthetics with the intention of supporting hydration, repair and overall skin quality.
Patients may hear the terms PDRN facial, salmon DNA facial, Rejuran or polynucleotide injections used as though they are identical. They are not always interchangeable. Formulations, concentrations, delivery methods and regulatory status can differ, which is why product selection should be part of a medical consultation rather than a social-media trend.
What I Expect PDRN to Do—and Not Do
I consider PDRN a skin-quality treatment. Patients often seek it for dullness, dehydration, fine lines, crepey texture, fragile-looking skin or the delicate under-eye area. The desired improvement is generally subtle and cumulative: skin that looks more hydrated, resilient and rested.
PDRN does not replace structural filler. It should not be expected to project the chin, lift heavy tissue or restore a large amount of facial volume. Setting that expectation clearly protects patients from disappointment and unnecessary treatment.
How the Treatment May Be Delivered
Depending on the formulation and goal, PDRN or polynucleotide products may be placed through precise microinjections or incorporated into a larger protocol with selected laser or microneedling procedures when appropriate.
The technical details matter. Depth, spacing, quantity, treatment area, sterility and timing influence comfort and outcome. Under-eye skin, for example, requires a different level of delicacy than thicker cheek or neck skin.
Why I Rarely Think About PDRN in Isolation
A patient with pigmentation and dehydration may need pigment correction as well as regenerative support. A patient with acne scars may need fractional treatment or RF microneedling because PDRN alone cannot remodel every scar. Someone with redness may need vascular treatment before the complexion can look truly clear.
The question is therefore not simply, “Should I get PDRN?” The better question is, “What is my skin missing, and where does PDRN fit within the complete plan?”
Who May Be a Candidate
PDRN may be considered for patients seeking improved hydration, texture, skin resilience or subtle regenerative support. It may also appeal to patients who do not want facial volumization but do want the skin to look healthier.
Candidacy depends on medical history, allergies, pregnancy status, active infection, inflammatory skin conditions, treatment area and the specific product being considered. A consultation is necessary because “salmon DNA facial” is a marketing phrase, not a diagnosis.
What Recovery May Look Like
Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or small injection marks may occur. Recovery depends on the product, technique, treatment area and whether another procedure is performed at the same visit.
I discuss expected downtime honestly before treatment. Regenerative aesthetics should still be medically planned, sterile and carefully followed—not treated as a casual add-on because it is popular in Korea.
My Clinical Perspective
I am most interested in PDRN when it contributes to a broader strategy for skin quality. It can be valuable, but it is not magic and it is not automatically the correct answer for every patient asking for glow.
The best result comes from selecting the right patient, using the right product and combining it with the right technology only when that combination has a clear purpose.
Dr. Avaliani’s Clinical Standard
Every treatment plan is created after an in-person assessment of skin, anatomy, prior procedures, goals and acceptable downtime. Dr. Avaliani does not use factory protocols and may recommend against a requested treatment when it is unlikely to produce a safe, natural or meaningful improvement.
