The Korean V-Shape Face: How to Refine the Jawline Without Looking Overdone

A V-shape should never mean forcing every face into the same narrow template. The goal is proportion and balance, not imitation.” — Dr. Anna Avaliani

The V-Shape Is a Concept, Not One Procedure

The Korean V-shape describes a lower face that appears softly tapered from the cheekbones toward a refined chin. Online, it is often marketed as though one injection can create the result. In reality, lower-face shape is influenced by muscle, bone, fat, skin quality and facial proportion.

Two patients may request the same V-shape and require completely different plans. One may have enlarged masseter muscles. Another may have a short or recessed chin. A third may have submental fullness or skin laxity. Treating all three patients identically would be poor aesthetic medicine.

Step One: Identify What Is Creating Width or Heaviness

I evaluate the face from the front, profile and three-quarter views. I also watch the patient clench, smile and speak. This helps distinguish muscular width from skeletal structure, tissue laxity and volume distribution.

That distinction matters. Neuromodulator can soften an overactive masseter, but it cannot narrow bone. Filler can improve proportion, but it should not be used to disguise every form of heaviness. Energy-based tightening may help selected laxity, but it cannot replace structural support when support is truly needed.

Masseter Neuromodulator Treatment

When the masseter muscles are prominent, carefully placed neuromodulator injections may gradually reduce muscular bulk and create a softer taper. Some patients also seek treatment because of clenching or grinding, although aesthetic and functional goals must be discussed separately.

More is not always better. Excessive treatment may create weakness, alter chewing or produce an imbalanced lower face. Dose and placement must reflect the patient’s anatomy and muscle strength.

Chin and Jawline Balancing

A subtle adjustment to chin projection or jawline continuity can sometimes create more refinement than aggressive slimming. The purpose is to improve proportion, not to manufacture an oversized chin or an unnaturally sharp jaw.

I use facial harmonization principles to decide whether support is needed, where it belongs and how much is appropriate. In many cases, a small amount placed precisely is more elegant than a large amount placed everywhere.

Skin Tightening and Submental Contouring

Loose skin or fullness beneath the chin may blur the jawline even when the bone structure is favorable. Depending on the cause, I may consider EMFACE Submentum, energy-based skin tightening, collagen-stimulating treatments or nonsurgical fat-reduction options.

These treatments are not interchangeable. Fat, muscle and lax skin behave differently, so the diagnosis must come before the device.

What I Will Not Do

I will not force a patient’s face into a trend that does not suit the anatomy. I will not overfill a chin simply to create a dramatic profile. I will not treat a structurally broad jaw as though it were only a muscle problem.

Part of being a facial architect is knowing when refinement will enhance the face and when the requested change risks making it less natural.

The Refined Result

The most elegant V-shape is not an obvious point at the chin. It is a balanced transition from the cheekbones through the lower face, with natural movement and appropriate proportions preserved.

The patient should look more defined, rested and harmonious—not as though the face was copied from someone else.

Every treatment plan is created after an in-person assessment of skin, anatomy, prior procedures, goals and acceptable downtime. Dr. Avaliani does not use factory protocols and may recommend against a requested treatment when it is unlikely to produce a safe, natural or meaningful improvement.
